Gillcarcinus was named by Collins and Morris (1978) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-m]. Its type is Gillcarcinus amphora.
It was assigned to Xanthidae by Collins and Morris (1978); to Decapoda by Sepkoski (2002); to Chasmocarcinidae by Karasawa and Schweitzer (2006); and to Chasmocarcininae by Karasawa and Kato (2003), Schweitzer et al. (2004), Schweitzer et al. (2010) and Schweitzer et al. (2022).
