Meylan 2013Skull broad and low, wider than long, rounded anteriorly in dorsal view, with a very extensive skull roof (more extensive than other sandownids), very shallow temporal emargination with parietal-squamosal contact; orbits facing anterolaterally, placed forward and closely spaced; large triturating surface with a pair of deep pits in the jugal (unique among cryptodires, seen also in the pleurodire family Bothremydidae); unique among turtles in having prefrontaljugal contact present below orbit excluding maxilla from orbit margin and a medial process of the jugal that forms a large, flat, horizontal, plate-like flange within the fossa temporalis inferior; unique among described members of the family Sandownidae in having the incisura columellae auris open.
