Taxonomy
Copris pristinus was named by Pierce (1946). Its type specimen is LACMIP 2850, a cephalon/head, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Rancho La Brea, Pit A (LACMIP 88), which is in a Rancholabrean tar tar in California.
