Taxonomy
Scopelus hygomii was named by Lütken (1892). It is extant. It is the type species of Hygophum.

It was recombined as Hygophum hygomi by Fraser-Brunner (1949), Brzobohaty and Nolf (1996) and Girone et al. (2006).
