Stigmosphaera was named by Haeckel (1887) [Sepkoski's age data: D R Sepkoski's reference number: ZR74]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Hexastylidae by De Wever et al. (2001); and to Spumellaria by Sepkoski (2002).
