Varanopus was named by Moodie (1929). It is considered to be a form taxon. Its type is Varanopus curvidactylus.

It was assigned to Cotylosauria by Haubold (1971) and Haubold (1974); and to Reptilia by Ptaszyński and Niedźwiedzki (2004).
