Taxonomy
Himalayasaurus was named by Dong (1972) [in Young & Dong (1972); Sepkoski's age data: Tr u Sepkoski's reference number: 746].

It was considered a nomen dubium by Lucas and González-León (1995) and Maisch and Matzke (2000); it was misspelled as Himalayosaurus by Sepkoski (2002), McGowan and Motani (2003) and Maisch (2010).

It was assigned to Ichthyosauria by Sepkoski (2002); to Shastasauridae by Dong (1972), Carroll (1988) and McGowan and Motani (2003); and to Shonisauridae by Maisch (2010).
