Anthodon was named by Owen (1876).
It was assigned to Stegosauria by Winkler (1893); to Stegosauridae by Hennig (1915); to Pareiasauria by Broom (1913) and Haughton (1932); to Pareiasauridae by Schwarz (1914), Hartmann-Weinberg (1937), Efremov (1940) and Carroll (1988); and to Pareiasauria by Lee (1997).
