Taxonomy
Spatangus tapinus was named by Schenck (1928). Its type specimen is SDSNH 52 and is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is SDSNH 261 Timber Canyon, which is in an Eocene marine sandstone in the Tejon Formation of California.
