Sphenaulax was named by Zittel (1877) [Sepkoski's age data: J Call-l J Oxfo-u Sepkoski's reference number: 868]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Hexactinosa by Sepkoski (2002); and to Craticulariinae by Finks et al. (2004).
