Coona was named by Simpson (1938). It is not extant. Its type is Coona pattersoni.

It was assigned to Didelphidae by Simpson (1948), Marshall (1982) and Carroll (1988); to Didelphinae by McKenna and Bell (1997); and to Derorhynchidae by Goin and Abello (2013).
