Praolestes was named by Matthew et al. (1929). Its type is Praolestes nanus. It is the type genus of Praolestinae.
It was assigned to Leptictidae by Matthew et al. (1929); to Geolabidinae by Van Valen (1967); to Anagalida by Carroll (1988); to Leptictida by McKenna and Bell (1997); and to Praolestinae by Lopatin (2006).
