Olenopsis was named by Ameghino (1889). Its type is Olenopsis uncinus.

It was synonymized objectively with Paranamys by Candela (2005).

It was assigned to Echinomyidae by Ameghino (1889); to Dinomyidae by Fields (1957); and to Dasyproctidae by McKenna and Bell (1997).
