Etymologydedicated to the Puelche people, who inhabited the south of Mendoza Province.
Taxonomy
Asteromys puelche was named by Candela et al. (2021). Its type specimen is MCNAM-PV 4072, a mandible, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Quebrada Fiera, which is in an Oligocene lagoonal/restricted shallow subtidal tuff in the Agua de la Piedra Formation of Argentina.
