Lemureops willsonpiperi was named by McAdams and Adrain (2009). Its type specimen is SUI 110213, a cephalon/head (cranidium), and it is a cast. Its type locality is H-264-267T, which is in a Blackhillsian open shallow subtidal horizon in the Fillmore Limestone Formation of Utah.
