Taxonomy
Novitatus mapesi was named by Malinky (1989). Its type specimen is USNM 18318-E and is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Red Limestone, Smith’s Sound, which is in a Branchian carbonate limestone in the Brigus Formation of Canada.
