Daphoenus minimus was named by Hough (1948). Its type specimen is AMNH 39099, a skull, and it is not a trace fossil.
It was considered a nomen dubium by Gustafson (1986); it was recombined as Paradaphoenus minimus by Hunt (1996), Hunt (1998) and Hunt (2001).
