Taxonomy
Balaenotus insignis was named by Van Beneden (1872) [ ]. Its type specimen is none designated and is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Stuyvenberg, which is in a Zanclean/Piacenzian marine sandstone in Belgium.

It was recombined as Balaena insignis by Lydekker (1887), Trouessart (1898) and Trouessart (1904); it was recombined as Balaena (Balaenotus) insignis by Newton (1891); it was recombined as Balaenula insignis by McLeod et al. (1993).
