Taxonomy
Grippia was named by Wiman (1929) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Olen-u Sepkoski's reference number: 2]. It was considered monophyletic by Motani (1999).

It was assigned to Omphalosauridae by Huene (1951), Carroll (1988); to Grippidia by Motani (1999), Motani (2000); to Ichthyopterygia by Sander (2000); to Ichthyosauria by Sepkoski (2002); and to Grippiidae by Maisch and Matzke (2000), McGowan and Motani (2003), Maisch (2010), Ji et al. (2016).

Motani 2000"Small to medium-sized ichthyopterygian; anterior terrace of upper temporal fenestra present; prefrontal shelf prominent; transverse flange of pterygoid well-defined and anterolaterally projected; flange posterior to the coronoid process of surangular; at least two rows of maxillary teeth; tooth crowns bulbous posteriorly and pointed anteriorly; tooth crowns small relative to skull width; humerus short and distally expanded; first metacarpal lunate; at least some phalanges with round proximal expansions; manus longer than more proximal part of forelimb; posterior dorsal vertebrae long, with height/length ratio of about 1·2."
