• A Hipparion premolar found by one of the authors (W. J. Z.) in 1967 near the village of Kasteliana, central Crete (see fig. 1), initiated a systematic search for mammalian remains in the area. Efforts were concentrated on sections with alternating continental, brackish and open marine sediments, in an attempt to establish a correlation between continental and marine biostratigraphic zones
