Kastellios K1 (Miocene of Greece)

Where: Crete, Greece (35.0° N, 25.3° E: paleocoordinates 35.0° N, 25.3° E)

• coordinate estimated from map

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Vallesian (11.6 - 8.7 Ma)

Environment/lithology: terrestrial; marl

• The measured section (fig. 2) is exposed in a gully on the western slope of the Kastellios hill (Plate 1, fig. 1). Its lower part consists of alternating continental, brackish and marine clastic sediments with a large amount of detritic material of basic composition, which gives some of the marls a greenish colour.

Size classes: macrofossils, mesofossils, microfossils

Collection methods: surface (in situ), sieve,

• A Hipparion premolar found by one of the authors (W. J. Z.) in 1967 near the village of Kasteliana, central Crete (see fig. 1), initiated a systematic search for mammalian remains in the area. Efforts were concentrated on sections with alternating continental, brackish and open marine sediments, in an attempt to establish a correlation between continental and marine biostratigraphic zones
