• Brachiopods suggest the Echinalosia maxwelli brachiopod zone, equivalent to the upper part of APP3.2 or lower APP3.3 palynomorph zone. Laurie et al. (2016) dated zircons from the top of APP3.2 (Rowan Formation) as 271.60 and 271.89 Ma, constraining its upper part to Roadian, given a Roadian-Wordian boundary around 266.9 Ma (Wu et al., 2020). The base of APP3.2 is not constrained radiometrically, so it is unclear whether the zone is entirely Roadian or extends down to the Kungurian. The base of the Roadian is also unclear. Wu et al. (2017) argued for an age close to 272.95 Ma based on zircons from South China just below the local first occurrence of J. nankingensis. However, Davydov et al. (2018) obtained U-Pb dates of 273.1 and 274.0 Ma from units bearing ammonoids typically assigned to the Roadian in boreal regions, and argued for the base of the Roadian as old as 277 Ma. If the base of the Roadian is the younger date, then APP3.2 may largely be Kungurian in age, which is used here.
