Oxroad Bay Exposure A (Carboniferous of the United Kingdom)

Where: Scotland, United Kingdom (56.0° N, 3.0° W: paleocoordinates 10.3° S, 1.7° W)

• coordinate based on nearby landmark

• small collection-level geographic resolution

When: CM palynozone zone, Sunnyside/Rhodes Limestone Member (Garlton Hills Volcanics Formation), Tournaisian (358.9 - 346.7 Ma)

• The large number of tuffs may provide absolute ages. Palynozone scheme based on miospores

• group of beds-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: "channel"; lenticular, graded, tuffaceous, green siliciclastic sediments

• Consists of an over-steepened channel, numerous erosion surfaces represented by small-scale unconformities and disconformities. Strongly indurated.
• Consequently, horizons are of very limited lateral extent (often lens-shaped in transverse section: Fig. 10b)...Soft sediment deformation features...Greenish tuffs vary greatly in texture from fine sandstones to coarse agglomerates, and consist of diagenetically-altered basalt fragments in a complex, largely secondary matrix. Both upward-fining and upward-coarsening graded horizons evident.

Size class: macrofossils

Preservation: adpression, recrystallized, permineralized, replaced with calcite, replaced with dolomite, replaced with pyrite

Collection methods: surface (in situ), mechanical, peel or thin section

• Occurence data from reference #3954
