Where: Athens County, Ohio (39.3° N, 82.1° W: paleocoordinates 9.1° S, 20.4° W)

When: Pennsylvanian (323.2 - 298.9 Ma)

Environment/lithology: shale

• 10 years of strip mining results in about 20 miles of essentially continous exposures of the coal. In this area flora occurs in a discontinous shale parting in the coal. The shale parting ranges from a few inches up to three feet in thickness.
