Station 3; Sunchal (Paleocene of Argentina)

Where: Jujuy, Argentina (23.5° S, 65.0° W: paleocoordinates 26.3° S, 53.5° W)

• coordinate based on political unit

• small collection-level geographic resolution

When: Maíz Gordo Formation, Late/Upper Paleocene (58.7 - 55.8 Ma)

• Formation also called Sunchal

• bed-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: lacustrine - small; lithified, green, muddy mudstone and calcareous limestone

• The Maíz Gordo Formation, related to the last main flooding event of the basin, shows typical lacustrine limestone values, possibly with low organic productivity. The lake which formed the Maiz Gordo formation must have been very shallow because it has alternating lacustrine and partially exposed mudflat deposits.
• Green rock, easily breaking into small angular fragments. In its upper part it shows streaks of red, increasing until we reach an entirely red deposit. Horizon with insects was typial green formation interbedded with limestone.

Size class: macrofossils

Preservation: mold/impression
