Where: Argentina (40.4° S, 65.2° W: paleocoordinates 40.8° S, 61.1° W)
• coordinate based on nearby landmark
• outcrop-level geographic resolution
When: Gran Bajo del Gualicho Formation, Middle Miocene (16.0 - 11.6 Ma)
• LITHOSTRATIGRAPHY: From the Gran Bajo del Gualicho Fm, which overlies the Arroyo Barbudo Fm (Maastrichtian?-Danian), and is overlain by the Puerta del Diablo Fm (Late Miocene-Pliocene). AGE: On the basis of fossil content, Lizuain and Sepilveda (1978) and Lizuain (1983), assigned a Late Eocene-Miocene age to the Gran Bajo del Gualicho Formation, and Sepilveda (1983) further restricted it to the Oligocene and the Middle-Late? Miocene. Camacho (1987) correlated the Gran Bajo del Gualicho For- mation with the "Estratos con Monophoraster y Venericor." These stratawere originally suggested to be of Late Eocene age (Camacho, 1974, 1995), but today are included in the Chenque Formation (Bellosi, 1990), which now is regarded to be of Early Miocene-Middle Miocene age (Barreda and Palamarczuk, 2000). STRATIGRAPHIC POSITION: From the upper part of the formation.
• group of beds-level stratigraphic resolution
Environment/lithology: coastal; poorly lithified sandstone and poorly lithified, shelly/skeletal sandstone
Size class: macrofossils
