Eiberg section, sample 26 (Triassic of Austria)

Where: Austria (47.6° N, 12.2° E: paleocoordinates 31.1° N, 16.6° E)

• coordinate estimated from map

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Vandaites stuerzenbaumi ammonoid zone, Hochalm Member (Kössen Formation), Rhaetian (208.5 - 201.3 Ma)

• Unit 3, Korallenkalk-Bereich

• bed-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: deep subtidal; lithified limestone

• The absence of tempestites, change in the bivalve and brachiopod associations (appearance of deep burrowing suspension-feeding bivalves, and low abundance of terebratulid brachiopods adapted to shallow turbulent water) suggest a deposition below storm wave base in unit 3. The ostracod assemblages of unit 3 are therefore indicative of a deeper subtidal environment, probably close to the storm wave base.

Size class: microfossils

Collection methods: acetic
