Azogues view (Miocene of Ecuador)

Also known as Locality RJB 9602

Where: Cañar, Ecuador (2.8° S, 78.9° W: paleocoordinates 3.5° S, 75.9° W)

• coordinate stated in text

• small collection-level geographic resolution

When: Azogues Formation, Middle Miocene (16.0 - 11.6 Ma)

• The 19 fossil specimens were found in deposits of the Azogues or Guapán Members of the Azogues Formation, whose sediments have been dated at 13.0–10.2 Ma (Hungerbühler et al., 2002).

• formation-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: lacustrine - small; claystone

• The sediments are indicative of quiet water, lacustrine deposition, but at most outcrops small-scale soft sediment deformation indicates that sedimentation rate was fairly high (estimated at 1 mm/year by Steinmann, 1997; reported in Hungerbu ̈hler et al., 2002).
• Sediments enclosing the fossils are fine clays and silts.

Size class: macrofossils

Preservation: adpression
