L13 (Triassic to of Zambia)

Also known as Locality 15 of Drysdall and Kitching (1963)

Where: Eastern, Zambia (10.8° S, 33.2° E: paleocoordinates 51.0° S, 21.9° E)

• coordinate based on nearby landmark

• local area-level geographic resolution

When: upper Member (Ntawere Formation), Anisian to Anisian (247.2 - 228.0 Ma)

• formation-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: pond; lithified, nodular, red, calcareous mudstone

• The upper Ntawere succession is composed of dark red fissile mudstone with rhizocretions and laminar calcrete horizons, alternating with light-red massive siltstone interbedded with lenticular trough cross-bedded, coarse-grained siliceous sandstone, or gritstone. The new silesaurid was recovered from an outcrop of dark red fissile mudstone containing thin sheets of rough-surfaced calcareous nodular material, which has encrusted all of the bones. The interpreted depositional setting is a semipermanent standing water body in an arid floodplain setting. Associated fish, nonmarine bivalves (Unio karrooensis), and stromatolitic carbonates support the interpretation of a seasonal pond environment.

Size classes: macrofossils, mesofossils
