Brjamslaeck (Brjánslækur) (Miocene of Iceland)

Where: Iceland (65.5° N, 23.2° W: paleocoordinates 65.5° N, 23.2° W)

• coordinate based on nearby landmark

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Brjánslækur-Seljá Formation, Serravallian (13.8 - 11.6 Ma)

• The age determination of the Brjánslækur-Seljá Formation is based on absolute age determination from McDougall et al. (1984) and palaeomagnetic measurements (Friedrich 1966; Grímsson 2007) correlated to the world Cainozoic magnetotimescale by Berggren et al. (1995).

• group of beds-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: pond; lithified, tuffaceous siltstone

• Sediments at Seljá and Surtarbrandsgil suggest that the region was a lowland and highland environment with extensive river systems and several small shallow lakes or ponds and swamps (Denk et al., 2011).
• Finely-laminated siltstones with interlaminated diatomite (based on Denk et al., 2011).
