Gensel and Andrews locality W (Devonian of Canada)

Where: Quebec, Canada (48.8° N, 64.3° W: paleocoordinates 35.6° S, 12.2° W)

• coordinate based on nearby landmark

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: annulatus-lindlarensis pollen zone, Cap-aux-Os Member (Battery Point Formation), Late/Upper Emsian (402.5 - 391.9 Ma)

• This locality has been dated to the late Emsian using spores, falling within the sextantii Subzone of the annulatus–lindlarenisis Zone of Richardson and McGregor (1986).

• bed-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: fluvial; lithified shale

• Cant and Walker (1976) suggested a braided river model of deposition for the Battery Point Formation based on evidence of lateral migration of in-channel bars and reconstructions of paleoflow directions. The Cap-aux-Os Member was interpreted by Lawrence and Rust (1988) as having been deposited by the meander belts of moderate to high sinuosity rivers that flowed across a muddy, vegetated coastal plain next to a marine embayment.

Size class: macrofossils

Preservation: mold/impression
