Locality 19 [Lake Bridgeport Shale] (Carboniferous of the United States)

Where: Wise County County, Texas (33.2° N, 97.8° W: paleocoordinates 6.7° S, 33.1° W)

• coordinate estimated from map

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Lake Bridgeport Member (Wolf Mountain Formation), Missourian (306.0 - 303.7 Ma)

• LITHOSTRATIGRAPHY: From the Lake Bridgeport Shale Member of the Wolf Mountain Formation. AGE: Missourian. STRATIGRAPHIC POSITION: A 31 foot (9.7 m) thick section of the Rock Hill Limestone and Lake Bridgeport Shale is exposed at locality 19. The Lake Bridgeport Shale is 30 feet (9.1 m) thick and is light olive gray and fissile. The basal portion of the section is a 2 foot (0.6 m) thick sandstone, very pale orange when fresh and grayish orange when weathered. In the sandstone, the plant fossil Calamites (Pteridophyta) occurs. Ripple marks indicate a paleocurrent direction of N 43 W. The fissile shales contain fossiliferous iron claystone nodules that are very dark red and moderate reddish orange.

• member-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: marine; poorly lithified, gray, green shale

• LITHOLOGY: Light olive gray and fissile. LITHIFICATION: Poorly lifthified, based on facies description.

Size classes: macrofossils, mesofossils
