Stegovnik, unit 4 (Permian of Slovenia)

Where: Slovenia (46.4° N, 14.4° E: paleocoordinates 10.2° S, 24.7° E)

• coordinate stated in text

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Born Formation, Asselian (298.9 - 295.5 Ma)

• A single, approximately 30-cm-thick limestone bed. Thus, the fusulinoidean assemblage of the Born Formation corresponds to the time interval between the Sphaeroschwagerina moelleri-Schwagerina fecunda and the Pseudofusulina moelleri zones, which indicates the late Asselian to early Sakmarian in the Southern Urals. [Because Sphaeroschwagerina dominates beds below and immediately above the coral unit, and because Darvasites appears higher, I assigned an Asselian age.]

• bed-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: lithified, gray, sandy limestone

• The Born Formation indicates deposition in an open lagoonal setting that was repeatedly affected by sedimentary influx from platform-margin oolitic and sand shoals. Some of the mixed carbonate-siliciclastic rocks have characters of debris-flow deposits.
• Dark grey sandy limestone with large corals and brownish sandstone

Size class: macrofossils

Collected in 2015; reposited in the MfN
