Nelson Bay Formation (Pleistocene of Australia)

Where: New South Wales, Australia (38.6° S, 141.6° E: paleocoordinates 40.0° S, 141.3° E)

• coordinate estimated from map

When: Early/Lower Pleistocene (2.6 - 0.8 Ma)

Environment/lithology: terrestrial; silty claystone

• The Nelson Bay Formation is characterized by a series of al-ternating biocalcarenites and silty clays (Boutakoff, 1963) re-flecting changes in climatic conditions from arid to humid re-spectively during a single‘interglacial.’It is divided into lowerand upper members, separated by an erosional unconformity, which are further subdivided into 7 units, labeled A–G (Hann,1983) (see Fig. 1). The silty clays are interpreted as paleosolhorizons, although sections of the main fossiliferous unit B, fromwhich 97% of the specimens have been recovered, may havebeen deposited in a shallow waterhole.

Size class: macrofossils
