Comiso (Pleistocene of Italy)

Where: Italy (37.0° N, 14.6° E: paleocoordinates 37.0° N, 14.6° E)

• coordinate estimated from map

• local area-level geographic resolution

When: Middle Pleistocene (0.8 - 0.1 Ma)

• A continental limnic succession, made up by palaeosols, lacustrine and aeolian deposits is interbedded between Lower Pleistocene marine deposits and early Middle Pleistocene marine sands. Numerous vertebrate remains have been collected in the various levels of the Pleistocene limnic sequence of the Comiso area. The fossil bird bones were associated in all the deposits with remains of endemic mammals of the early Middle Pleistocene "Elephas falconeri Faunal Complex" of the Sicilian biochronological scheme.

• group of beds-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: lacustrine; siliciclastic sediments

• The detected limnic sequence of the Comiso area is constituted by five main lithotypes organized in eleven recognized layers of fine sands, silts and clays alternating with soil horizons and aeolian sands

Size class: macrofossils

Collection methods: Repository: Museo Civico di Storia Naturale of Comiso (MCSNC)
