Quebrada de Humahuaca (Pliocene of Argentina)

Where: Jujuy, Argentina (23.2° S, 65.4° W: paleocoordinates 23.3° S, 64.6° W)

• coordinate estimated from map

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Middle Member (Uquía Formation), Late/Upper Pliocene (3.6 - 2.6 Ma)

• Following the inferences of Reguero et al. (2007; see Introduction section, “geological setting and age”), it is highly probable that this material was collected in the middle unit of Uquía Fm. (late Pliocene). However, the exact stratigraphic occurrence of the studied remain is unknown and untraceable given the available data in published bibliography and the historical archive of MACN (Ignacio Legari pers. comm.).

Environment/lithology: fluvial; tuffaceous, white, yellow claystone

• The Uquía Fm. is composed of a sequence of 70-300 meters of thick fluvial deposits, dominated by whitish or yellowish fine-grained deposits, containing tuffitic levels (Galli et al., 2014, 2017). Castellanos (1953) informally subdivided the Uquía Fm. into three units: lower (Early Pliocene), middle (Late Pliocene), and upper (early Pleistocene).

Size class: macrofossils

Collected by Enrique de Carles in 1912

• The material was collected by Enrique de Carles. It was inferred from Castellanos (1950) that the studied material could have only be collected during the expedition commissioned by Dr. Ángel Gallardo during 1912. In this expedition, de Carles prospected a relatively small area of Quebrada de Humahuaca, Jujuy, encompassing Uquía and Quebrada Yacoraite localities (nearly 10 km apart). Following the inferences of Reguero et al. (2007; see Introduction section, “geological setting and age”), it is highly probable that this material was collected in the middle unit of Uquía Fm. (late Pliocene). However, the exact stratigraphic occurrence of the studied remain is unknown and untraceable given the available data in published bibliography and the historical archive of MACN (Ignacio Legari pers. comm.).
