When: Arkona Formation (Hamilton Group), Middle Devonian (393.3 - 382.7 Ma)

Environment/lithology: marine; poorly lithified, gray, argillaceous shale

• Shale, light gray, highly fossiliferous. Shale weathers easily to soft clay. Fossils calcareous, beautifully preserved. Sample from layer 22 feet below the Encrinal limestone (see Shimer and Grabau, 1902, pp. 152-60, for description of the stratigraphic section including the Encrinal limestone).

Size classes: macrofossils, mesofossils, microfossils

Preservation: original calcite
