Rio Cosarivo, Cassano Valcuvia (Triassic of Italy)

Where: Varese, Italy (45.9° N, 8.7° E: paleocoordinates 8.9° N, 20.0° E)

• coordinate estimated from map

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Archelaus ammonoid zone, Cunardo Formation, Longobardian (242.0 - 235.0 Ma)

• A single fossiliferous layer at the very top of the Cunardo Formation, overlain (likely unconformably) by the Pizzella Marl. The ammonoids recognised in this bed are considered to be of the Archelaus zone, indicating an early Late Ladinian age (Calabrese & Balini 1995).

• bed-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: limestone

• "The fossiliferous layer is a dolomitic microsparite with pelagic bivalves (also hinged), bioturbation (burrowing), fine shreds of organic matter and local submillimetric concentrations of phosphatic compound. Authigenic quartz and feldspars are also present." (Calabrese & Balini 1995)

Size class: macrofossils
