When: Jackey Shale Formation, Induan (252.2 - 251.2 Ma)
• 3 m from the base of the overlying Ross Sandstone. To date, the only macrofossils recorded from the Jackey Shale and correlative beds are the abundant plants Glossopteris, Gangamopteris, Vertebraria, Phyllotheca and Schizoneura, and these indicate a generalised Late Permian age. Associated microfloras are more definitive, however, and can be assigned to the Protohaploxypinus microcorpus Zone of Late Permian (Chhidruan) age (Forsyth 1984). In the Bowen Basin, the Protohaploxypinus microcorpus Zone (APP6) is regarded as likely basal Triassic, given a U-Pb date of 252.54 Ma in the underlying APP5b (Laurie et al., 2016). Likewise, Fielding et al. (2019) assigned the zone and the underlying Playfordiaspora crenulata Zone (both of which make up APP6) to the Griesbachian on the basis of the a 252.31 Ma U-Pb date and the presence of the Glossopteris extinction in the underlying APP5b. If Protohaploxypinus microcorpus coexists with Glossopteris, Vertebraria, and other plants in Tasmania, that would imply diacroneity in one or both of the markers, but suggests a very latest Permian age at the oldest. Bicknell et al. (2022) state that the plant macrofossils occur lower in the Jackey Shale, supporting an early Triassic (Griesbachian) age for the upper part.
