Bilboa Colliery (Carboniferous of Ireland)

Where: Ireland (52.8° N, 7.0° W: paleocoordinates 1.5° S, 4.3° E)

• coordinate based on nearby landmark

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Triquitrites sinani - Cirratriradites saturni other zone, Coolbaun Coal Formation, Westphalian A (318.7 - 316.9 Ma)

• "From the three-foot bed of black shale immediately over the coal, associated with plants and small fresh-water bivalves allied to Unio." The coal seam worked at Bilboa was the No. 3 coal of the Geological Survey, or Ward's Seam (Neville, 1956). Ward's Seam is at the base of the Coolbaun Coal Formation of Higgs & O'Connor (2005). The new palynological data obtained from the Westphahan rocks of the Leinster Coalfield confirm the succession is exclusively Westphalian A (Langsettian) in age. The miospore assemblages recorded are assigned to the Triquitrites sinani - Cirratriradites saturni (SS) zone for the lower part of the Coolbaun Coal and underlying units, equivalent to the Lenisulcata non-marine bivalve chronozone.
