La Peña buildup, massive coral facies (Eocene of Spain)

Where: Spain (42.4° N, 0.7° W: paleocoordinates 41.1° N, 3.9° W)

• coordinate estimated from map

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Arguis Formation, Priabonian (38.0 - 33.9 Ma)

• Middle part of the lower Priabonian Sequence IV

• group of beds-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: reef, buildup or bioherm; lithified framestone

• Coral buildups occur as low-relief bioherms and are up to 20 to 30 metres thick and a few hundred metres wide. A bathymetric position of the buildups around 15–25m was constrained by Morsilli et al. (2012) from the analysis of light-dependent communities and lithofacies distribution within the buildups.
• The coral boundstone facies present in the core of the buildups consists of scleractinian coral colonies (platy, massive, thick branched), mostly in growth position.

Size class: macrofossils
