Where: Inyo County, California (36.8° N, 117.5° W: paleocoordinates 9.0° S, 54.4° W)

• coordinate estimated from map

When: Tin Mountain Formation, Early/Lower Mississippian (358.9 - 346.7 Ma)

• Lower Tin Mountain limestone.

Environment/lithology: lithified, medium-grained, shelly/skeletal, black, gray, silty limestone

• Limestone, crinoidal ; black, weathering dark gray to black ; beds as much as 1 foot thick, bedding planes nodular with swells and sags 2 to 4 inches wide and 0.25 to 0.5 inch deep, b edding slightly contorted ; brachiopod and coral fauna with Syringopora in apparent growth position. Sample B -1050, 15.1 per cent insoluble residue of gray siliceous silt with abundant silicified ostracodes and other fossils ; texture of fossil fragments as much as 2 mm in diameter for equidimensional particles and as much as 5 mm long for platelike particles in a very fine-grained matrix of black, clear, o r pink-buff grains ; fragments form layers as much as 20 mm thick in which they comprise as much as 75 per cent of rock separated by fine-grained layers about 20 mm thick in which large fragments form less than 25 per cent of the rock ; finer laminae resulting from grain orientation pass around larger particles.

Size class: macrofossils

Preservation: replaced with silica
