Near house of fam. Rivera (Cretaceous of Colombia)

Where: Santander, Colombia (6.7° N, 73.2° W: paleocoordinates 3.5° N, 42.7° W)

• coordinate estimated from map

When: Paja Formation, Late/Upper Aptian (122.5 - 113.0 Ma)

• Overlying Formation: San Gil Inferior Formation (equated with Tablazo Formation by some authors-Moreno and Sarmiento, 2002). Underlying Formation: Rosablanca Formation. Thickness: At least 7.3 meters. (Vega et al, 2010; Gaona-Narvaez et al 2013).

Environment/lithology: offshore; black, calcareous shale and marl

• In Gaona-Narvaez et al., 2013, they studied a similar section of the Paja Formation. They say that, "the Paja Formation indicates deeper shelf environments marked by periods with a higher supply of terrigenous minerals (clay, quartz). Concomitant increases in organic matter suggest that nutrient supply from the mainland is at the origin of enhanced productivity in the basin, which led to the deposit of black shales in a poorly oxygenated environment. The state of the oxygen deficient bottom persisted into the Upper Aptian portion of the section, although the beginning of the Upper Aptian coincides with a remarkable increase in the influx of bioclastic materials into deeper parts of the basin."
• The Paja Formation is mostly composed of tabular, partly indurated, organic-rich, black clay-shales, calcareous clay-shales and marlstones, interbedded with indurated tabular and lenticular (P up to 0.6%) beds of black, non-fossiliferous and fossiliferous calcimudstones. Contains fish scales, ammonites, bivalve fragments, gastropods, Inoceramids, ostracods, etc. (Gaona-Narvaez et al., 2013).
