IGM-1582 (Cretaceous of Mexico)

Where: Nuevo Leon, Mexico (26.1° N, 100.7° W: paleocoordinates 32.4° N, 80.3° W)

• coordinate estimated from map

When: Lower siltstone Member (Potrerillos Formation), Late/Upper Maastrichtian (70.6 - 66.0 Ma)

• The Portrerillos Formation consists of 5 members, with the lower siltstone member being the lowest one. Overlying Formation: Adjuntas Formation. Underlying Formation: Muerto Formation. Thickness: 2,300 m at type locality. The Portrerillos Formation is part of the Difunta Group. (McBride et al., 1974).

Environment/lithology: deltaic; fine-grained siltstone and fine-grained mudstone

• The facies of the unit were primarily deposited in a prodeltaic, delta front, and marginal deltaic facies, which may have included delta margin platform and delta shelf deposits. (Vega and Feldmann, 1991; McBride et al., 1974).
• The fossils in this location were found in the upper part of the lower siltstone member that contains finer grained sediments (siltstone and mudstone). There is intense bioturbation is this locality with burrows in the course brown sandstone. This locality has a greater diversity of molluscan fauna than locality A. Most are infaunal bivalves. Along with the crabs, corals, gastropods, bivalves, cephalopods and annelids were found previously. (Vega and Feldmann, 1991; Wolleben 1997).

Size class: macrofossils
