NMB Locality 16858 - Rio Cana (Miocene to of Dominican Republic)

Where: Dominican Republic (19.5° N, 71.3° W: paleocoordinates 19.5° N, 70.5° W)

• coordinate based on nearby landmark

When: Bedded Siltstone A Member (Gurabo Formation), Late/Upper Miocene to Late/Upper Miocene (11.6 - 3.6 Ma)

• Overlying Formation: Mao Formation. Underlying Formation: Cercado Formation. Thickness: 268 m. (Saunders et al., 1986; Lutz et al., 2008; and McNeill et al., 2012 for revised thickness).

Environment/lithology: coastal; massive, burrowed, rubbly, silty siltstone

• Saunders et al., 1986, generally says of this area that the water depths must have been less than 30 meters, and that it was a shallow marine, clear-water environment because of the presence of Platy Reef Corals with common Agaricia. There are also Amphistegina, Sphaerogypsina, Planorbulina, and frequent miliolids. This sentiment is echoed by Waller (2011), who says that the Pectinid assemblages in the Río Cana sections support the current understanding that this section on the whole represents shallower water than the Río Gurabo section, and also contains sea grasses.
• Saunders et al., 1986, describes the fossils in this locality as "alternation of silts and indurated layers." Furthermore, this specific locality was found to have a large echinoid; crab claws; few coral fragments; red algae nodules; and mollusks. This section of the Gurabo Formation on Rio Cana is in the lower middle, and is characterized by massive coral rubble beds interbedded with calcareous silts and sands, with a few richer shell beds. It also has some layers thick with burrows.
