Morro Hueco (Miocene of Panama)

Where: Colon, Panama (9.2° N, 80.2° W: paleocoordinates 9.0° N, 79.3° W)

• coordinate estimated from map

When: Chagres (Rio Indio Facies) Formation, Messinian (7.2 - 5.3 Ma)

• Overlying Unit: N/A. Underlying Unit: The Chagres Formation sits disconformably on the Gatun Formation; a marked change in lithology and a temporal hiatus characterizes the disconformity. (LeBlanc 2021).

Environment/lithology: coastal; fine-grained, silty sandstone and silty claystone

• The Toro Member is replaced laterally to the west by the Rio Indio facies. This facies is shallower than the Chagres facies. Collins et al, 1996, say that the facies were deposited from 50-80 m in depth. Carrillo-Briceno et al., 2015, mention that it was deposited in less than a 100 m water depth. These depths represent inner to middle neritic environments.
• Contains essentially no tuff, conglomerate, or volcanics, as in the underlying Gatun Formation. It instead has fine, silty sandstone, as well as silty claystone. (Woodring 1957; Collins et al, 1996).

Size class: macrofossils
