Finger Island (Miocene of Panama)

Where: Bocas del Toro, Panama (9.1° N, 82.0° W: paleocoordinates 9.0° N, 81.0° W)

• coordinate estimated from map

When: Nancy Point (Lower Part) Formation, Messinian (7.2 - 5.3 Ma)

• Overlying Unit: Conformable with the Shark Hole Point Formation. Underlying Unit: Conformable with the Tobabe Formation. Thickness: 500 m. (LeBlanc 2021).

Environment/lithology: deep-water; massive, volcaniclastic, shelly/skeletal, gray, blue, muddy, silty sandstone

• The Nancy Point Formation represents a rapid deepening from the nearshore Tobabe Sandstone. The lowest part of the formation is considered middle neritic, but quickly deepens to represent deep water bathyl depositions from 200-500 m. (Coates et al., 2005; Collins, 1993; Uhen et al., 2010).
• This locality is located on "finger island", where the lower part of the Nancy Formation seems to be prominent according to Uhen et al., 2010. The formation as a whole is composed mostly of bioturbated, muddy, massive, shelly, silty, dark blue-gray, bioclastic, and volcaniclastic sandstones, as well as muddy siltstone. It contains scattered mollusks and occasional leaves and plant fragments with diverse moderately abundant molluscan assemblages throughout the section and several, rich, low diversity, thick-shelled mollusk beds at the base. Thalassinoid burrow systems are also occasionally found. (Coates, 1999b; Coates et al., 2005; Collins 1993; Uhen et al., 2010).

Size class: macrofossils
