Levipustula fauna - sandstone association (Carboniferous to of Argentina)

Where: San Juan, Argentina (31.7° S, 69.4° W: paleocoordinates 51.8° S, 69.3° W)

• coordinate estimated from map

When: Leoncito Formation, Serpukhovian to Serpukhovian (330.9 - 315.2 Ma)

• late Serpukhovian-Bashkirian

Environment/lithology: shallow subtidal; sandstone

• glaciomarine environment; From a taphonomic viewpoint the brachiopod-dominated shell concentrations (Septosyringothyris keideli-Costuloplica leoncitensis assemblage) are interpreted as being of sedimentological origin, produced by reworking and winnowing above the fair-weather waves base in the lower shoreface.
• stratigraphical section of the Leoncito Formation is dominated by sandstone facies, with the diamictite beds appearing at the top; middle part with very thick beds of fine to medium grained sandstone that grades upwards into grey mudstone, where the Levipustula Fauna has been identified

Size classes: macrofossils, mesofossils
