Turbocheilus helicites Community in Wales and Welsh Borderland (Silurian of the United Kingdom)

Where: England, United Kingdom (52.0° N, 3.0° W: paleocoordinates 24.5° S, 12.0° W)

• coordinate based on political unit

• local area-level geographic resolution

When: Platyschisma Shale Member (Downton Castle Formation), Pridoli (423.0 - 419.2 Ma)

• member-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: marine; bioturbated, gray, calcareous siltstone and bioturbated, gray siltstone

• "BA 1 to high BA 2...A lagoonal environment suggested as the sequenced of deposits compares favorably with other described lagoon facies."
• "...best developed in dark-colored muddy siltstone facies of Platyschisma Shale Member, although it also occurs in light-colored muddy siltstone facies of the member, but less commonly. The [dark facies] comprises wavy-bedded, flaggy dark-gray siltstones, commonly calcareous and extensively bioturbated; preserved sed. structures include parallel- and ripple-laminations. the [light-gray facies] comprises wavy or lenticular bedded siltstones with parallel- and ripple-laminations, or they may be totally reworked, bioturbated. They show evidence of subaerial exposure in the form of desiccation cracks. Both facies assigned to restricted environment, probably lagoonal, within low salinity setting."

Size class: macrofossils

Collection methods: Abundances (present, common, fairly common, very common) are given.
