Quatatal River, east of La Llanera (Pliocene of Venezuela)

Also known as Guatatal River

Where: Monagas, Venezuela (10.0° N, 63.6° W: paleocoordinates 9.9° N, 62.9° W)

• coordinate based on nearby landmark

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Las Piedras Formation, Pliocene (5.3 - 2.6 Ma)

• Initially assigned to the Quiriquire Formation by Palmer (1945), but the Quiriquire Formation is restricted to a small area around its type section in the Quiriquire field and the other coeval outcrops in Monagas state are often referred to the Las Piedras Formation. Due to the locality and the description of the outcrop given by Palmer (1945), the specimen probably comes from the upper strata of the Las Piedras Formation.

• group of beds-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: fluvial-lacustrine; gray, blue, calcareous claystone

• Somewhat calcareous clay with a little finely disseminated gypsum. The clay is blue-gray, several feet below the surface, and weathers above to a yellowish-brown soil. Occasional blocks of coquina made up mostly of Corbicula and Ostomya are strewn about.

Size class: macrofossils

Collected by E. Mencher, N.E. Weisbord, O. de Sola in 1944; reposited in the PRI
