Can Cerdà Quarry, el Papiol (Miocene of Spain)

Also known as Roques Blanques

Where: Spain (41.5° N, 2.0° E: paleocoordinates 41.6° N, 0.6° E)

• coordinate stated in text

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: MN 4 (16.9 - 16.0 Ma)

• "The locality belongs to the upper subunit of the Upper Detritic Unit of the Lower Continental Complexes of the basin (Casanovas-Vilar et al., 2011). Like other sites from el Papiol (Can Canals, les Escletxes), it is located just tens of meters below the Langhian marine limestones (Crusafont et al., 1955), which argues against an age younger than 16.0 Ma. The presence of the suid Listridon lockharti (Crusafont et al., 1955; Golpe-Posse, 1974), recorded in MN4 and MN5 (Orliac, 2009), favors a correlation with MN4 (Casanovas-Vilar et al., 2011) rather than MN3. This agrees (see Hilgen et al., 2012) with the presence of Megacricetodon cf. primitivus and Democricetodon sp. at les Excletxes del Papiol (I. Casanovas-Vilar, unpubl. data), which further suggests a correlation with local zone C of the Calatayud-Montalbán Basin (ca. 16.6–16.0 Ma; Van der Meulen et al., 2012) for all of the above-mentioned sites." (Alba et al. 2018)
